Doors

Doors are very important in Ireland, painted bright, dominant colors. There are several legends about why this is so. One is that a famous writer, George Moore, got tired of his drunk neighbor mistaking Moore’s home for his own and so painted his door bright red. Another is that it is a sign of rebellion. In fact, there are wonderful posters one can purchase called “Doors of Ireland.”

It was chilly when we went, temperature around 41 degrees, but all the shop doors were left open, the clerks inside wearing coats and stocking caps. It is a sign that the shop is open and welcoming.

Apparently a simple “OPEN” sign is not sufficient.
